I come from the small, humble town of Yuma, Arizona. It isn't much, but it certainly gave me plenty of inspiration to write my first novel. I have lived here for about 25 years and 3 years in Tucson where I studied to become an elementary teacher. How's the job? It's fine. However, my true passion was to be an author.
As a young man, I was always interested in films. It played a huge part in writing my stories. I was a sucker for superhero movies, especially those that went in depth with their characters. The Batman movies were my greatest inspiration for my novels, with films such as "The Dark Knight" and "The Killing Joke". The people in my life, my culture, my race, and my religious beliefs all play a huge part in my stories as well. As some authors have done the same, my friends and my family members have become characters in my novels, either as the heroes or the villains. What did I choose for them to be? Well, they would have to read the stories to find out.
I have been writing since middle school, where I created short stories here and there. It wasn't until college that I truly became interested in writing and publishing a novel. I joined writing groups at my local library and learned the art of storytelling and how to intrigue the audience. It was a long process, but I finally published my first book, "The Guardian Angel: Hero of Hope" in June of 2020.
I am currently living in Yuma, Arizona as an ESS Teacher for Valley Horizon Elementary. My other hobby, strangely enough, is performing as a professional wrestler in Arizona. I have been a fan of wrestling since 2001 and started wrestling amateurly in middle school and high school. After I graduated from the University of Arizona, I headed back to hometown and tried my hand at professional wrestling in Yuma. I have met a colorful amount of people in this kind of business and I have learned plenty. This is actually how I met my good friend, TJ Warren! Although he prefers Justin. The rest is history and we create beautiful stories together.
My desire to create a superhero novel dates all the way back to 2010 when I first saw "The Dark Knight". It's dramatic storytelling and it's compelling characters inspired me to create the Guardian Angel. It took many revisions, several character changes, and even different villains but I believe the finished product is at its best.
Besides superhero novels, I am also currently creating a fantasy novel called, "The Legend of Nia and the Sword of Yeshua". Inspiration of this story came from other fantasy novels such as Lord of the Rings, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Eragon. Other non-novel influences are from video games such Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Ni No Kuni to name just a few. I hope for it to be release in late-August and it will be my longest book to date!
I have been a believer for most of my life and my beliefs do play a huge part in my story telling. I will never be preachy in my novels, but the morals are certainly and influence from my faith. With the Guardian Angel, it isn't about how God can change your life, it's what people do with that faith when they are going through their struggles. To me, a test of faith will always reveal your true character, and that is heavily represented in that novel.
She is the love of my life and my greatest support. We have known each other for over ten years and have been in a loving relationship for the last three years. Her wonderful support has helped me to keep going with my passions, whether it be writing or wrestling. She has offered me great advise in storytelling, character depth, and, most importantly, how to use social media. I cannot thank her enough for all the wonderful love and support she has given me throughout the years and I truly believe that I wouldn't have gone this far without her!
My Family, Race, and Culture
Being a Mexican-American, I get to see both perspectives from my Latino side and my American side. They have both influenced me to be the kind of person I am today, as well as creating the characters in my story. I know I said that my morals in the story mostly come from my beliefs, but family also plays a huge part in that.
George R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Dr. Seuss
These were the authors I knew about growing up and read their work several times. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series always intrigued me and Lewis's The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe certainly excited me to read out loud in my elementary class. Dr. Seuss's books however inspired me in several ways. His memorable quotes and his colorful characters inspired me to read books and it sparked my fascination of imagination!
